Thanks to our community organizations in Titonka, there is much to do! Click each organization below for details and information on how you can get involved.

American Legion Auxiliary

American Legion Auxiliary

Locally, the American Legion Auxiliary, Breen Post 465, Department of Iowa, remains an active, 40-member unit, dedicated to community service and a host of charitable causes. The post was formed in 1930 and is named after local serviceman, Leo C. Breen, who was killed in combat during World War I. Breen Post 465 meets monthly to plan, organize and carry out a long list of activities, which include:

  • Decorate with 213 flags and 203 crosses on Memorial Day
  • Poppy Sales
  • Hosting a free coffee each Veterans Day
  • Hosting the annual TSB Bank Christmas Open House
  • Holding a newly reinstated Memorial Day program to honor veterans, living and deceased
  • Sending sympathy, get well, anniversary and significant birthday cards to area residents
  • Mailing Christmas greetings and care packages to area service men and women
  • Celebrating birthdays of members who are residents of the care center
  • Valentine cards for care center residents
  • Providing hospital equipment loans to anyone in need. Available through Sharon Uken. The equipment includes most items, except hospital beds
  • Sponsoring pillow cleaning every other year
  • Donating money annually to the Kossuth County Food Pantry
  • Contributing to scholarships for Auxiliary Junior Members
  • Other community needs, for example, the post donates a sum of money and paper products to the Titonka Community Center annually for general upkeep
  • Basket to veterans for “Make a Difference Day”
  • And good, old-fashioned fun!

American Legion Auxillary cosponsered the POW-MIA display in the Buffalo Creek Activity Center.

American Legion Breen Post 465
American Legion

The American Legion Breen Post #465 was established August 1, 1920. The American Legion Post #465 along with the VFW William H. Kennedy Post #4071 provides a color guard for military funerals and graveside rites and for Memorial Day observances. The Post was closed on January 1, 2018.

The Good Conversation Book Club

Book ClubTitonka Public Library Book Club, The Good Conversation Book Club, meets each month to discuss a book that its members have read. The club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the Titonka Public Library or Buffalo Creek Community Center.  Check the calendar for the Book of the Month and meeting times.

If you would like to join the book club, let the library know, so they can get a book for you to read. A cup of coffee or tea and a good lively conversation will be waiting.

Friends of Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge

U.S. Fish and Wildlife ServiceThe Friends of Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge is a non-profit organization open to the the public for membership.

Mission

  • We are dedicated to supporting environmental, educational and recreational activities and programs.
  • We are dedicated to increasing public understanding of the history, environment and mission of the Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge

Goals

  • To increase public awareness and appreciation of the Refuge
  • To encourage public participation in prairie-pothole preservation
  • To promote public use and enjoyment of the Refuge

Your membership in the Friends of the Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge will support “Friends” activities in education, habitat management programs and other efforts at the Union Slough.

Girl Scouts

Girl ScoutsThe Titonka Girl Scouts include Daisy, Brownie, Junior and Cadet Scouts. They meet every other Monday at the Buffalo Creek Activity Center. Meetings normally begin at 6:00 p.m., but time is subject to change. Meetings include crafts, singing and snacks. The Titonka Girl Scouts participate in the Girl Scout Cookie and Nut Sales. They also have fun overnight events and camping.

North Iowa Wood Carvers

The goal of the North Iowa Woodcarvers is to promote the skills involved in the art of woodcarving and related crafts and to share these techniques and ideas with others. The Woodcarvers meet at 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month from September through June at the Buffalo Creek Activity Center. They also sponsor one weekend seminar each year.

Titonka Community Club

Titonka Community Club was formed by merging the Chamber of Commerce, Titonka Community Betterment Council and the Indian Day Committee. The Club sponsors Easter Egg Hunt, Indian Day, and Christmas in Titonka.

Community Club normally meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Titonka Community Center at 6:30 p.m. to plan community activities. (Check the calendar)

Titonka Conservation Club - Trapshooting League

The Titonka Conservation Club began around 1976. They hold a Summer Trapshooting League for 10 weeks from late May through July on Mondays. The season ends with a Trophy Shoot and a picnic. The league is primarily team shooting. The shoot begins at 5:00 pm and is held at Michaelsen Marsh, 2.5 miles west of Titonka on 330th St. Participants and shooters are welcome. Titonka Valley Indians

4-H logoThis 4-H Club is a co-ed club and meets the second Saturday of every month at Titonka United Methodist Church from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. They work on projects at each meeting. Ronda Gray is the leader. You can contact her at 515-928-2711 for more information or to inquire about joining.

VFW Post #4071

VFW logoThe William H. Kennedy VFW Post #4071 was organized April 19, 1945, following World War II. It was named after William H. Kennedy, a casualty of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, aboard the USS Oklahoma. (Obituary)

The VFW Post #4071 has merged with Algona VFW Post #2541.

The VFW cospondered the POW-MIA display at the Buffalo Creek Activity Center.
